Dema Project 2024

Textile Art

The Dema project was part of the artist's research for the UCL MA in Art Education, Culture, and Practice. This project explored the concept of kinship through women’s art and feminist theory. The artist reflected on her personal experiences and artistic journey, emphasising the influence of her grandmothers and other women who helped shape her understanding of feminism.

The art project Dema, meaning "bundle" or "package" in Greek, is a freestyle crochet installation that symbolises the interconnectedness of women's stories and experiences across generations. The project incorporates various elements, including found objects and worn clothes. Two components of the Dema installation were created in collaboration with the artist's children, highlighting intergenerational learning and collaboration as tools for creation.

Dema was inspired by various feminist artists and writers who connected women's stories and influenced the artist's development. It reflects the ongoing struggle for women's rights and emphasises the importance of intergenerational learning and collaboration.
