In Between 2026
Mixed media, Textile Art
In Between began as a drawing inspired by Emily Kngwarray, an Australian abstract painter. The artist was drawn to Kngwarray’s vibrant colours and her portrayal of women’s rituals and gatherings, which conveyed stories of relationships and connections to the land, animals, and plants.
In Between features abstract embroidery on repurposed socks once worn by family members. The artist selected worn textiles, clothing, and socks to preserve memories and stories from the family’s routines, walks, and travels.
This artwork explores the relationship between drawing and embroidery. The artist aimed to translate the drawing’s colours and layered effects by using threads instead of coloured pencils. Drawing provided an immediate response to observation, while embroidery required a deliberate, time-intensive process linked to women’s handiwork. Many women in the artist’s family have created intricate, masterful needlework.
